Fillings, root canals and crowns
A decayed milk tooth is treated rather than ignored, because it holds the space for the adult tooth underneath and because a child in pain does not sleep. Children's crowns come in metal and in a tooth coloured version for teeth that show.
Space maintainers
When a milk tooth comes out too early, the teeth beside it drift into the gap and the adult tooth has nowhere to arrive. A space maintainer holds the gap open until it does. It is a small appliance that prevents a much longer problem.
The appointment itself
Short, and nothing is rushed. Children are shown the instruments before anything is used, and told what will happen next. Most of what makes a child frightened of a dentist is being surprised.
