Five habits that quietly protect your teeth

Good dentistry is mostly unremarkable. So is looking after your teeth between appointments.

People often ask what they should be doing differently, expecting an answer involving a product. Usually it is not a product. It is the same few habits, done at a time of day that makes them easy to keep.

Brush at night, without fail

Saliva slows down while you sleep, and saliva is what protects a tooth. Going to bed with a clean mouth matters more than the morning brush, and it is the one most often skipped.

Let the toothpaste sit

Spit, do not rinse. Washing your mouth out immediately removes the fluoride you have just applied, which is the part that was doing the work.

The rest are small: clean between your teeth in whatever way you will actually keep up, keep sweet things to mealtimes rather than spread across the day, and mention a new sensitivity early rather than waiting to see whether it settles.

Rather just ask?

Nothing on this page is a substitute for someone looking at your teeth. Bring the question to an appointment.
